Mumbai Welcomes the World to the Global Esports Games

Mumbai is alive in a celebration of culture, competition, and the future of digital sport as the Global Esports Games Mumbai opened on Thursday, 19 March 2026. Set against the dynamic backdrop of the vibrant Global Esports Arena Mumbai (GEAM) at MMRDA Grounds, the Opening Ceremony marked a defining moment—not only for India’s esports journey, but for the global esports movement.

With a keynote by the Honourable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, the ceremony brought together international athletes, Member Federations leaders, industry pioneers, and thousands of spectators and fans from around the world. Held on the auspicious occasion of Gudi Padwa, the evening blended tradition with innovation—symbolising a new beginning for esports in one of the world’s most vibrant digital economies.

For four days, Mumbai stands at the centre of global esports. From 78 countries and hundreds of athletes in the qualifying stages, 48 elite athletes from 19 nations are at the World Finals in Mumbai – in a showcase of skill, strategy, and competitive excellence. From the electrifying athlete parade to the formal declaration of the Games open, the ceremony reflected the scale, ambition, and unity that define the Global Esports Federation’s vision.

In his opening address, GEF President & CEO Sir Paul J. Foster captured the significance of the moment: this was not merely the start of a tournament, but “the beginning of something far greater.”

Emphasising India’s role as a global engine of digital innovation and youth potential, he described the country as a place that “allows us to think bigger than ever before”—a sentiment echoed throughout the evening.

Mumbai itself stands as a powerful symbol of that ambition. A city long celebrated for its cultural and sporting legacy, it now emerges as a nexus of technology, media, and creativity—where traditional sport converges with the digital frontier. In hosting the Global Esports Games, Mumbai is not only welcoming the future of esports; it is helping shape the future of the global digital economy.

The ceremony also marked a landmark announcement for the global esports community. In a moment that resonated far beyond the arena, global icon Jackie Chan was unveiled as the official Ambassador of the Global Esports Games. Celebrated worldwide for his legacy of perseverance, creativity, and cultural impact, his appointment signals the growing intersection of sport, entertainment, and global youth culture.

The opening also underscored the strength of collaboration behind the Games. With the support of partners including EFlag Corp, the Government of Maharashtra, and Maharashtra Tourism, the event stands as a testament to what is possible when global vision aligns with local leadership.

Looking ahead, the Global Esports Federation announced an ambitious 10-year strategic partnership with India—focused on developing the next generation of digital athletes and creators, expanding opportunities in the digital economy, and fostering innovation across esports, technology, and media. It is a long-term commitment rooted in a simple belief: when India moves forward, the world moves with it.

As the lights dimmed and the declaration was made, a powerful message carried across the arena and beyond—this is a #worldconnected through play.

From Singapore to Istanbul, from Riyadh to Mumbai, the journey of the Global Esports Games continues to evolve. But here in Mumbai, it has taken a giant step forward.
