The inaugural Commonwealth Esports Championships and Commonwealth Esports Forum were staged in Birmingham, England, in August 2022. The Championships marked a tangible outcome of the Strategic Partnership between the Global Esports Federation and the Commonwealth Games Federation, announced in May 2020. The event was supported by the British Esports Federation, the UK’s national not-for-profit body established in 2016 to promote esports, raise awareness, improve standards, and inspire future talent.

The Commonwealth Esports Forum took place on 5 August 2022, followed by the Commonwealth Esports Championships on 6–7 August 2022, both hosted at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Birmingham.

Dota 2, developed by Valve, is a globally recognised 5-versus-5 multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) where teams compete to destroy the opponent’s Ancient. Known for its depth, strategy, and high-skill gameplay, Dota 2 featured as a competitive title at the Commonwealth Esports Championships 2022, showcasing world-class teamwork and precision on the international stage.

eFootball, developed by Konami, is a globally recognised football simulation game where players compete in realistic matches to outscore their opponents. Featuring as a competitive title at the Commonwealth Esports Championships 2022, it showcased skill, strategy, and high-level digital football competition on the international stage.

Rocket League, developed by Psyonix, is a fast-paced game that combines football with high-speed, physics-based vehicles, where teams score by hitting the ball into the opponent’s goal. Known for its accessibility and competitive depth, Rocket League featured as a title at the Commonwealth Esports Championships 2022, delivering exciting, skill-driven action on the international stage.

The Commonwealth Esports Forum was held on 5 August 2022 at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Birmingham, convening global thought leaders, industry experts, policymakers, athletes, and innovators from across the Commonwealth and beyond.

Organised by the Global Esports Federation and the Commonwealth Games Federation, the Forum explored the opportunities, challenges, and future of esports at the intersection of sport, technology, education, inclusion, and society—bringing together diverse voices ahead of the inaugural Commonwealth Esports Championships.

The event featured a full day of keynote addresses and panel discussions, highlighting esports’ growing global impact and its role in a connected future.
